Small Business: Downside of an extended vacation
Employees take advantage of being away from their jobs during holiday seasons as well as other slow weeks throughout the year. Admittedly from a business owner’s point of view it could be a good thing. The lower the payroll paid out the higher the overall profits. But, you know what they say about too much of a good thing.
I believe that if you prove how dispensable you are your boss may eventually believe you. Although it is tempting to extend your time away by saving up vacation days, sick days and personal days it may not be appreciated by your boss or your co-workers. Covering your duties for a day, three days or even a week is one thing – but past that it gets tiresome.
Unless you feel that you do your job so much better than any other can these extended vacations can cause your superior to realize that your duties could be divided among other employees and that your position could be eliminated.
Even if your position is not eliminated you may leave an opening for a co-worker to prove himself or herself at a higher level than they would have otherwise. Just as you enjoy the extended break – they may also enjoy your time away.
