Small Business: Unemployment high - Jobs everywhere
Hearing that the unemployment rate is 6.7 percent I am perplexed that there are still so many help wanted signs at so many small businesses. Even the (not so small) local Wal-Mart has had a list of job openings posted at the registers for the past couple of months.
If someone applied Monday to work for me that I could trust really wanted the job (not just looking for their unemployment search quota) I would hire him or her. My attitude is a result of the thirteen employees that came and went during last year.
I realize that someone coming from a large company often thinks that working for a small business will not live up to their needs. I encourage them to try it – they might like it. Decide what you need and go for it. Tell the potential employer what your expectations are and they will appreciate the honesty.
Even though I cannot pay a huge wage I can offer other benefits. For example, customized hours, no nights, one half day on Saturday (not every Saturday) and no major holidays (full time is paid holidays). I even welcome part-time help that uses us as supplemental income.
I am not alone. There are many businesses that feel the same way and offer every benefit that they can.
Before the unemployment benefits run out try opening your own business. You will either love it or you will be ready to work for the other guy. Good luck to you in your search and to all of the small businesses out there just looking for good faithful employees.
