Small Business: Plan your time before someone else does it for you
Today was quite a day. My husband and I are small business owners and we have been inundated with the needs of others. I can warn you now that once you are self employed others around you immediately believe that you have a lot of time on your hands – time that they are more than eager to relive you of.
I truly believe that winter causes things to break. Vehicles, doors and batteries far and wide seem to demand attention. This week my husband and I have been asked by five different family members to leave work and do things for them. Why you ask? Because they have too much time on their hands and they think we do too. Oh yea, I already said that didn’t I?
Employees are not exempt. It is only Thursday and we have been short of help twice. Where did they go? To take care of family members – what else?
The point I am making is that self-employed people are targets for people that don’t necessarily have the ability to fix things themselves or the money to pay for handymen (or handywomen). Since we do not have to answer to anyone (except our customers) it is easier to ask us to leave work than someone that punches a time clock.
Before you start your own small business make sure that you have time to devote to its success. There are some small businesses that may work better than others when time away is necessary.
· One without regular hours – no 8 to 5
· One that you can do from anywhere – cell phones and laptops come to mind
· One that someone else can cover the work until you can return the favor.
I am in no way trying to persuade you not to start your own small business. I am just pointing out one of the pit falls that you need to stay aware of. I don’t remember where I heard this but it is my motto – “if you do not plan your own time someone else will do it for you”.
All too true! I am OK at the moment because we moved countries and I know no one here - but when we move back home everyone will think I am unemployed just playing on the internet all day and all hell will break loose!
