Home Office: Data backup online OK but keep local copy

Published by debcook at 8:32 pm under Living Edit This

Many of us travel and since we are away from our home offices it is tempting to use one of those online backup services. That way our files are accessible from wherever we are. We feel safer with our data offsite and out of harms way.

With the financial climate like it is today and the way it is steadily declining I suggest that we all make our own backups as well. I realize that this may seem like a backwards way of thinking but is it?

What if the hosting business goes out of business? Will you be able to make a quick copy of your data? Possibly not due to time and bandwidth. Once you are told that there is a problem the time will be short and the bandwidth may not be sufficient to let everyone download his or her data in time.

This is merely a thought that crossed my mind and it may be far fetched. However, I have seen and heard unbelievable things in the last few weeks so I am trying to think of things that I can prepare for. My suggestion is to backup your own data and keep it in a safe place. For convenience sake you can still use the online serves as well.
