Home Office: Too many projects can reduce productivity

Published by debcook under organize Edit This

Do you have too many distractions at work in your home office? If your focus stays on everything except the task at hand that answer is probably yes. Is this lack of focus caused by your personality or is it simply from the arrangement of the workspace?

Both your personal traits and the arrangement of your workspace could be the culprit. If you notice that you are not getting enough work done there are remedies available to you.

Multiple projects going on at the same time can be a huge time waster. If you start multiple projects all at the same time you are likely to loose track at some point. You worry that you will forget something and while you are worrying you do miss something. Why?

A lack of adequate workspace causes projects to be spread all around the home office. Some may be in boxes, some may be in drawers and some may be spread across multiple flat areas such as side tables and shelves. Don’t leave out the computer – it has limitless areas to store projects.

Multiple projects require extreme organization. If you are highly skilled at tracking your time without wasting time in the process it can be done. The secret is time scheduling. It involves cutting out as many distractions as possible. Date books, calendars, PDAs and of course the so loved sticky notes help keep you moving towards a timely conclusion of your projects.

If you need to improve your organizational skills you can read books, attend seminars or you can hire a professional organizer. The latter option will most likely be the most expensive but it will also be most likely the most successful.
