Home Office: Is OpenOffice always a bargain?

Published by debcook under Living Edit This

How many of you have and regularly use multiple computers? Personally I use three different computers on a regular basis. My laptop is with me at all times, I have a desktop in my home office and a desktop at my small business.

Microsoft Office is loaded on each computer. However, each computer has a different version of office installed. One has Microsoft Office 1998, one has Microsoft Windows 2000 (upgrade) and one has Microsoft Windows 2003. As long as the files can be exchanged between computers I am not paying the price of upgrading each computer to the same version.

Today OpenOffice 3.0 became available to all as a free download. Great price. As long as I am in my home office or at my business I could probably deal with OpenOffice. When I leave either the story changes. Why? I have to be online to use OpenOffice.

I will have to pay the price to have Microsoft Office Suite installed on my laptop. I have written before about “cloud” computing and why I do not like it. OpenOffice requires a live connection to the Internet so…

A bargain is only a bargain if you can use it.
