Home Office - Seperate new files from the old files
Achieve files regularly to keep filing cabinets from bulging at the seams. That does not mean throwing files away it simply means moving them. It is fine to keep them near by – just keep them separate from current files.
Most of the time when you need a document or receipt you need it in a hurry. Thinner files are easier to sort through. Thinner files are easier to file into.
I was out of town on day and I received a call from a very stressed employee. A state inspector had dropped by asking for a copy of our current Worker’s Comp Insurance Policy. I calmly told them which drawer and which file contained the policy. Within minutes the issue was resolved and the inspector was on his way – satisfied.
This example took place in the office at work but the exact same theory holds true in my home office. Keeping a document is worthless unless you can find it when you need it.
