Organization is a necessary part of any home office. Without organization most of your time is spent hunting papers, pens and power adapters. Everyone wants to be organized but most people do not even know where to start.

I make it pretty obvious that a few of my intense interests center around mobile gadgets, blogging and space organization. I’ve come to realize that each one relates to the other.

It would take me all evening to completely explain home office organization so I will break my best tips into separate posts.

Everyone thinks that the best way to get organized is to go shopping. Well, it is more fun than getting down to the monotonous tasks at hand but it is both a waste of time and money at this point. How do you know what to organize if you don’t know what you have to organize?

Those little office gadgets we all have tend to be replaced each time they get covered up or dropped behind the desk. Important papers get misplaced in file drawers and under piles of magazines. Appointments get missed because you lost that scrap of paper with the date and time written on it. Here are a few steps to get going in the beginning.

  • Gather together several different sized cardboard boxes. Shoe boxes for small items and larger ones for files, magazines and binders. (no need to worry because these are temporary.
  • Lay these boxes in a row on the floor or if possible – on the desk
  • Label the boxes – writing utensils, blank paper and binders, empty file folders and small office gadgets
  • Start at one corner of the room and move out from there gathering every writing utensil you see. Check the drawers, desktop, floor and where ever else they may be hiding.
  • Repeat this process for categories that match your labeled boxes.
  • Once everything is gathered and in boxes you need to evaluate what you have.
  • Remove items that you are sure that you no longer want or need. Store this stuff away, donate it or throw it away.

These first steps are very important. Check back for my next few posts and I will help you organize your home office. I can guarantee that it is pretty painless and you will not regret it.
